Fernando Rodriguez su Señoria mando com-
parecer al Negro Santiago esclavo de Mi
guel el Joven de quienes su Señoria por ante
mi el Escrivano recivio juramento que lo
hicieron el memorado Rodriguez por Dios
y la Santa Cruz, y el Negro por Dios en
cuya existencia cree, bajo el que ofreccieron
decir verdad en lo que supieren y fueren
preguntados, y haviendo el dicho Rodriguez
leido en frances criollo al dicho Negro su
declaracion dada en punta cortada desde
la primera pregunta hasta la ultima
respuesta, la que corre y comienza a foxas
sesenta y cinco se reconocio que el Negro
Santiago habla y entiende bien dicho idio
ma, ratificandose en lo que tiene confe-
sado ante el Senor Theniente Goberna-
dor y Auditor de Guerra y responde----

Santiago slave of Miguel el Joven (‘the young’) to appear
from whom his Honor before
me the Scribe received the oath that
the aforementioned Rodriguez made before God
and the Holy Cross, and the Black before God in
whose existence he believes, under which they agreed
to tell the truth as they knew it and were
asked, and with the said Rodriguez having
read in creole French to the said Black his
declaration given in punta cortada from

sixty five it was understood that the Black
Santiago speaks and understands this language well,
confirming what he had confessed
before the Lieutenant Governor
